Poppy is the author of A Bard's Lament and the Black Diamond series. She lives in Enoshima with her husband and young son.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is a standout title of the fantastic fantasy role-playing video game series by BioWare. Aside from epic side quests, an awesome storyline, and warrior classes, there is a great assortment of romanceable characters for you to choose from. Romancing is optional, but it is a great and immersive addition to the game. Depending on your character's gender and race, there are different ways for your character to woo someone. Just follow some simple steps!

But who to choose? Close to the beginning of the game, it's possible to flirt with nearly everybody, but it can be hard to choose one suitor amongst the cute guys and girls available for seducing. Here's a run-down of all the characters you can romance in Dragon Age: Inquisition, how fun their romance story is, and what your character's requirements are.

1. Cassandra

Seeker Cassandra Pentaghast is the first character you encounter in the story. When you escape the Fade and wake up in a dungeon, she questions you about how everyone but you died at the Conclave, and how the mark appeared on your arm.

Cassandra seems to be hardened and emotionless, but deep down she is passionate and enjoys romance. By flirting, pleasing her, and helping her with her personal quests, you can crack that hard shell and find the loving woman inside.

  • Character Requirements: Male, any race
  • Approval Required: Yes
  • Difficulty: Medium. There are many quests you must complete before you can romance Cassandra, making it one of the more time-consuming romantic pursuits.

2. Solas

You first meet the apostate elf mage, Solas, when learning how to close a fade rift shortly after meeting Cassandra. 3. Josephine

Lady Josephine Montilyet is the inquisition's ambassador and is available to complete many war table missions, with the theme of power and noble influence. Cassandra introduces you to her after you stabilize the Breach.

Josephine is a noble who is well-versed in politics and diplomacy. She isn't a stranger to having fun, but is innocent in matters of love. At first, your flirting may seem to fall on deaf ears, but she will eventually see that you are serious.

  • Character Requirements: Either gender, any race
  • Approval Requirement: No
  • Difficulty: Easy. There are several quests you must complete to woo her, but as there is no approval requirement, you don't need to wait until she likes you enough to pursue her.

The journey to wooing Sera is full of laughter and fun. Sera is carefree, loves pranks, and sticks up for the poor and needy. One of the tavern songs is even dedicated to her and her cheeky ways.

  • Character Requirements: Female, any race

Iron Bull is a fun-loving, flirty warrior who hangs out in the tavern drinking ale and checking out the servants. Sometimes, you can catch snippets of conversation in your stronghold of women who have spent nights with him. Nevertheless, if you choose to romance Iron Bull, he is a faithful and loving boyfriend.

He asks to join the inquisition after you approach him to question him about the Wardens' involvement in the Divine's death.

Blackwall is a sweetheart who is eager to please you and the others around him. Pursuing a romance with him leads to a shocking discovery, and the romance itself is passionate and heartwarming.

Depending on whether you choose to ally with the Mages or the Templars, there are slightly different circumstances under which you first meet Dorian Pavus. But eventually, he will join your party if you let him. Dorian is from Tevinter, where magic rules all—which is quite the opposite of local attitudes and therefore causes a lot of distrust towards him from your companions and followers. However, he's a good person at heart who is charming, handsome, and a little full of himself.

His sexual preferences caused some friction between him and his family, leading to an interesting storyline that many LGBT players felt they could identify with. He is a sweet and flirtatious man and romancing him is a lot of fun.

Questions & Answers

Question: Why can I not romance Varric in Dragon Age: Inquisition?

Answer: Because he’s in love with Bianca.

Question: Why can’t I romance with Cole in Dragon Age: Inquisition?

Answer: Cole has a love interest in one of the DLCs. I’m sure he’d make an adorable boyfriend, though!

Question: Why can I not romance Leliana in Dragon Age?

Answer: I suppose people who romanced her in Origins wouldn’t like to see her romancing the Inquisitor. It could also be because Leliana is older and wiser and isn’t as romantic and innocent as she was in the first game. She is much less trusting than she used to be and probably doesn’t like to get close to anyone.

Question: Why does Warden Blackwall lie to you?

Answer: If you mean about the revelation in his personal quest, he lies to everybody. In my opinion, it adds a lot of depth and intrigue to him as a character. But the truth came out in the end, so if you forgive him, all is well!

Question: I saw romantic dialogue options for Scout Harding early on in the story and now she gives me extremely friendly greetings, but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Is she a romantic option in Inquisition?

Answer: No, you can't romance Scout Harding, you can just flirt with her a couple of times. I wish you could romance her though, she's cute!

I romanced Blackwall through my very first playthrough! He isn't a popular person to romance according to the poll, but I enjoyed his storyline. You'll also definitely be Sera's type if you're a Qunari :D

keiran01 on November 17, 2019:

yea i hope they have a few different options in the next game. i do like the whole tomboy kinda persona such as sera or jack from the mass effect games, i even got the same tattoo she gives shepard IRL recently :). I didnt have the same interest in cassandras character though unfortunately.

im playing as a female qunari for my second playthrough and il probably try romance sera or blackwall, somehow i didnt recruit him in my first run so hes a complete new character for me to find out about.

And im half hoping they bring back the warden from DA:O for the 4th game and i can try romance solas as my female elf warden but i doubt that would ever be an option.

Poppy (author) from Enoshima, Japan on November 17, 2019:

I agree, there are very few choices if you're playing as a straight male character. Cassandra's good if you like tough tomboys, but I agree that Josephine is pretty boring. I hope DA4 has more options for everyone.

My experience with romancing in Inquisition as a straight male character was first to flirt with Sera. That ermmm didn't go so well, so il try it on with Leliana, you know back to a good og character i know well and never really romanced back in DA:O and since i customised my tapestry love interest towards morrigan i know she is free to pursue anddddd she cant be romanced :/. Ok okok sooo il try with Harding shes cute but she has no extended scenes to make her feel like an actual love interest so its a little flat storywise. Oh the latest addition to the squad, Vivianne is intriguing il try romance her. Nope cant be done :/.

So cassandra or Josephine are the only viable characters both of which i found boring, i didn't even take cassandra out on missions and Josephine just felt like a tertiary character. So by the end of the game my hero felt uncomfortably familiar since he seems to be going it alone in life xD

Haha I would love to be able to romance her.
